In This Time of My Life

I don’t mind summer heat so much, but when the sun is merciless and sends temperatures into the upper 90 degrees and the heat index hovers around 105 degrees, I’m all for either being at the pool or staying indoors as much as realistically possible.
This morning, I scheduled some time to work on my next book of short fiction stories and my beaded artwork before heading out into the world. We had an appointment to meet – and out into the blast furnace of the Florida sun we went.

My beau and I headed to our local bookstore and picked up Sean Spicer’s new book, “The Briefing.” We were lucky to meet him and have him autograph our copy of the book. He was very nice, I thanked him for his service, and he responded, “Anytime!” with a sincere and quiet demeanor, I would say, not a boisterous braggadocios-ness by any stretch of imagination.
At the bookstore, we were approached by a newsman from one of the better news sources in our neck of the woods. He was very interesting in his own right. He interviewed my beau and I, and he later videotaped a short interview segment with us. What an honor that was! Last time I was taped for a news story was back in 1981 during the PATCO strike, but that’s a blog for another time. Hint: I was not a striker.

Outside the bookstore, we met a couple of ladies, Peg and Betty, who told us they are working on their family genealogy. They are hoping to connect the dots, as it were, to confirm yes or no if Mr. Spicer is their relation. I liked their friendliness with us and their enthusiasm with working on genealogy, as I know first hand what hard work it takes to get to the nitty gritty of the who’s who and the what’s what in one’s family.

We passed the movie house, where my beau and I laughed at the last movie titles on this marquee. It looked like “Gotti, Won’t You Be My Neighbor” was one-in-the-same movie. Oh, the humor we find in the funniest places, one of them being in our creative minds!
At this moment, as I’m dipping my pen into the inkwell at my writing desk writing my blog, my beau is already entrenched on the front room comfy chair, engrossed in Spicer’s book. The dogs are sacked out on the couch. Guess the heat of the Dogs Days of August got to them, too.

As voracious readers, we actually do this kind of thing – buy books we are interested in reading, and hopefully meet the authors and grab an autograph or two. When I was a kid, my girlfriends and I would do something similar, that is, we would find out where a Chicago Black Hawk hockey player was giving a speech, then queue in line for a How d’ya do? in our best Chicago accent, and an autographed stock photograph with a handshake in return. I still have those mementos, but what they talked about is lost to history, but I’m sure they were motivational, nonetheless.

It’s going to be a quiet evening, with my beau absorbed with “The Briefing,” and me working on my next book. A laid back evening is good once in a while.

In the next day or two, it’s back to the farm for us to do a second go ‘round with picking grapes, as we did last weekend. Some lucky relatives will also be getting a jar or two next week. Read about our visit to the farm in my article, “A Grape Experience.”

When the clouds decide to drop a few raindrops to create a delightful Florida sun shower, and a rainbow arches across the sky on this hot afternoon, it reminds me that I am happy and grateful to be here, in this time of my life.
