Hey Hey. Ho Ho.

Hippies, yippies, the fuzz, sit-ins, billy clubs, and tear gas. From way back in the olden days, I remember the thongs of demonstrators I saw on television packing Chicago city parks, throwing rocks and bricks, spitting on cops, spitting on veterans, screaming inaudible words, and chanting “Hey Hey, Ho Ho (insert the cause du jour here) must go”. In the newspapers and on the news, reports and films showed similar riots around in cities around the country. Most of these demonstrations, from what I remember, were about opposing the Viet Nam war; and then there was the riot in the streets during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, and there were some protests about civil rights and race sprinkled within the madness of the era.

This past Saturday, there was a little demonstration – more like a sit-in, actually – in one of the towns near me. The demonstrators sat on folding chairs, some held handmade signs, and they listened to the organizers blather on behind the microphone. The Cause du Jour was to protest the government’s policy of separating foreign families who illegally enter our country. Looks like they didn’t get the news that President Trump already struck down the practice that was begun by one of his predecessors. Oh, well.

And yet, this really was an anti-Trump rally under the guise of supporting illegal immigrant families. I get that they don’t like the guy, no matter what he does or doesn’t do, or how he parts his hair, or what he eats for breakfast. Everyone is free to choose who they like or don’t, regardless if they have a valid reason or not. It’s sad that they used a group of people, albeit illegal, to have an excuse to rally around the common hatred of one man.

I watched the video of the gathering here, and I got the feeling that most of the people were just reliving their hippie youth when they marched on city hall back in the day, or in the case of the younger set, they wanted to see what it was like when grandma and grandpa demonstrated against the government or the fuzz or mom and dad.

And those at the demonstration this past Saturday all looked so zombie-like and very unhappy—that unmistakable unhappy appearance that sets in a person’s face from being angry and unhappy about everything that touches – or doesn’t touch – his or her life. It’s that unhappy look that shows the self-imposed burdens they carry that displays they can’t stand their spouses, or don’t like members of the opposite sex, all government but socialist is evil, that everything right in the world is immoral to them, that life passed them by.

That life passed them by and they are trying to recapture it before the Grim Reaper captures them.

Hey hey, ho ho. It all looked so silly to me. And very sad at the same time.

Then, after I wrote my piece, I saw the news and video about the Antifa group inciting the riot in Portland, Oregon this past Saturday.  What is next?
