Fruit of the Palms

These past several days (seems more like a week, really), the rain has fallen in deluges, with barely a patch of blue sky seen. Yesterday was the first full day without any rain! Although we needed it, too much put an end to one of my pots of red firecracker flowers (Salvia splendens). I’ll need to remove them, but I probably won’t replace them since the other flowers that were with them (dianthus and verbena) didn’t die off. As far as the rest of the gardens go, everything is flourishing, and with a few days of dry, hot weather, everybody should be happy.

What I noticed in my sugar palm garden are the fruits they are producing. Each is about the size of a dime, and are located in the center of each palm. Aren’t they a nifty shade of orange?

One of the fruit clusters in one of my sugar palms.

From what I read, these little orange fruits are edible, but I’m leaving them to the birds to feast. I’d rather see the mockingbirds and others that visit enjoy a treat.

My little town is already setting up American flags and other patriotic symbols on lawns and in the downtown area. Looks like Memorial Day is going to be remembered as for what it represents, not just barbecues and store sales.

Hope you have a good weekend; see you back here on Sunday.
